Work in the wars

The first World War saw manufacturing facilities all over the UK being turned over to war production. The Diesel Company was no exception and local girls made  18 pounder shell cases in a section of the factory. The photograph above and to the right show the designated area of the works  in use for armament production.

The Diesel company played its part during the second World War and a section of the factory was turned over to the very secret manufacture of parts for the asdic system being used against the U boat threat by Royal Navy escorts. During the time the factory   was host to production, the area was strictly out of bounds to personnel who were not authorised.
